Abstract
Teacher retention is an educational crisis that is only progressing. This paper explores the history of teacher retention in the United States and the various factors that have led to the current status of retention in the field. New teachers are particularly susceptible to the factors that contribute to an early exit from the profession. A look at the challenges that new teachers face and how school districts are trying to address them is presented. A particular focus is on the influence of school-based administrators and teacher retention. Tools and strategies that can be used to support the wellbeing of new teachers are presented.
