Abstract

Abstract

From year to year the make-up of a class changes. Each class will bring new opportunities and new challenges for the teacher. Due to the changes and challenges in student needs, Social and Emotional Learning, (SEL), has become more prevalent in today’s classroom. Schools have incorporated social and emotional learning to help students manage their emotions and respectfully interact with their classmates and teachers. This qualitative research study interviewed five participants who teach students ages 3-6 years old. Through the interviews, I looked for ways social and emotional learning helped teachers navigate challenging behaviors in the classroom. Social and emotional learning can help students better understand ways to be self-aware and manage their emotions when interacting with peers. The participants I interviewed also found building relationships with students and caregivers helped to reinforce social and emotional learning in the home. Lastly, the support of the administration helped the participants as they worked to implement social and emotional learning as a consistent part of the classroom schedule.
