Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Women in Comic Books

Abstract

Recently, superheroes have dominated the box office with a number of films and television with years long shows. But, scholars find that there remains a misrepresentation of women as superheroes. Women superheroes are often subjected to brutal torture, bad outfits and a lack of exposure in main stream media. This project, Women in Comic Books, sought to compile data on how women superheroes are portrayed in comic books and in mainstream media. The project, through a short film, compiles information about the portrayal of women superheroes in mainstream media and asked seven students questions about superheroes. The students answered three informational and four opinion questions about female superheroes. Overall the students came to a general consensus that they did not know as much about female superheroes as they did for the male superheroes. The students also felt that many female superheroes were over sexualized in comic books and related media.
