Les Belles Rebelles: Jacobite Women and the Rising of 1745

Abstract

Women in 18th-century Scotland were heavily involved in the Jacobite rising that culminated in the 1746 battle of Culloden. Jacobite women tended not to adhere to gender norms of the time, a stark contrast to other 18th-century women, even those also living in Scotland. Through my research, I hope to showcase the ways in which Jacobite women supported their cause as well as how they were different from other women of the 18th century. Traditionally, research on the Jacobite Rising of 1745 only delves into the men of the time, neglecting the importance of the work that women accomplished. I will focus my research on the history of 18th-century Scotland, specifically women in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and the Battle of Culloden in 1746. I will also explore gender, focusing on women’s roles of the time and how Jacobite women did not necessarily fit into traditional standards.
