Abstract
This presentation will describe the Make Way for Books App, a bilingual early literacy resource for parents with children ages 0-5.
Our bilingual Make Way for Books App provides children and families with access to high-quality books and engaging literacy activities directly on their phone or tablet. Collaborative engagement is encouraged throughout the app. While sharing books on the Make Way for Books App, parents use educational content that guides them through effective reading practices, including ideas for asking questions, pointing out action, and prompting conversation. Books are paired with literacy activities to extend children’s learning, and are intentionally selected to be culturally relevant and give voice to authors and illustrators from diverse backgrounds.
Books are produced in collaboration with diverse local, national, and international authors and illustrators. Notably, we work with students from the creative writing department at the University of Arizona to source manuscripts while giving students the opportunity to create stories that have real impact in our community.
