Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Horses in Motion: Paintings and Drawings of the Mechanics of Equine Locomotion

Abstract

“Horses in Motion” is a series of my drawings and paintings created to explore the representation of equine movement. Although photographs and historical paintings inform my work, my main interest is in the differences of depiction of horses before and after the invention of photography. Eadweard Muybridge’s photographic studies of equine locomotion affected the portrayal of horses in art by clarifying limb positions in various stages of motion. For example, Muybridge’s findings influenced Degas’ sculptural representations of horses. This historical study is a background to my own creative work. My plan is to create a body of paintings and drawings based off on this research.
