Spoons
Abstract
Disability is one of the few things in life that can happen to anyone; it is completely unpredictable. Spoons are a measurement of energy - how much can we do when even getting out of bed requires three or four spoons? It is easy to take energy for granted until we don't have as much as we used to. Spoons looks at the relationship between disability and energy. It also looks at the relationship between my mother and I over the year that I began going through puberty and she began using a wheelchair. It looks at the relationship between our disabilities and how hard it can be to suddenly become disabled. I wrote this piece for my Multicultural Writing class last year, a class where for the first time, I wrote candidly about my own experiences of being a disabled person. This piece is the culmination of those efforts and is, to this date, the truest piece I've written.
