Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Argumentative Analysis of the Massachusetts Transgender Debate

Abstract

Last year, the state of Massachusetts made transgendered individuals a protected class. More recently, the Massachusetts State Department of Education issued mandates for schools to follow through with protecting transgender rights. The mandates allow transgender students to choose bathrooms and play on sports teams according to their gender identity as well as encourage gender-neutrality in the classroom. Proponents of Massachusetts’ actions say the new laws and mandates help to ensure transgender rights and prevent bullying. Those that are opposed either do not recognize transgender as a legitimate identity or do not feel that the mandates are fair to all students. This paper will examine the views and arguments of both sides and looks into their points of conflict by analyzing sources supporting both sides. I anticipate finding areas of contention as well as consensus between those in favor and those opposed.
