Individual Presentation or Panel Title
Hollins Accessibility
Abstract
Hollins' Accessibility started as a Short Term project: an accessibility audit of the campus according to the Americans with Disabilities' guidelines. It looked specifically at physical accessibility, focusing primarily on wheelchair access. The audit was separated into three categories: residential buildings, academic buildings, and administrative buildings. The goal of the project was to see exactly how easy (or difficult) it was to get around campus and what could be done to make Hollins more accessible. Naturally, this is a difficult thing to accomplish in part because Hollins is a historical campus and making accommodations would require renovations for some buildings. The results of the audit were not as good as expected; even buildings that appeared to be accessible suddenly had steep steps or no way to go between different floors. If the accessibility of the campus were improved, Hollins would be able to reach out to a new group of students that have not previously been a large part of the student body.
