Hollins Digital Commons - Hollins Student Conference (2012-2016): Contemporary Women’s Travel Blogs and Millennial Identity

Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Contemporary Women’s Travel Blogs and Millennial Identity

Abstract

This paper will analyze travel blogs written by women who study abroad in order to create a definition of millennial American identity. I will examine blogs from millennials who spend at least a semester in London during college. In reviewing these writings, I am looking for traits that represent how American identity manifests itself and is documented in writing when women spend an extended time abroad. I will work through an abroad program to select a group of women, born between 1980 and 1999, to select students who documented their time by blogging about their experiences while in London. I will analyze these blogs for traits that can be distinguished as American or representative of American millennials. In this process, I expect to find not only a sense of freedom and American exceptionalism, but also traits that are unique to the millennial generation. After gathering this information, I will create a definition of American identity that is representative of female millennials.
