Mildred Emory Persinger, Hollins College class of 1939, attended graduate school at Bryn Mawr and moved to Auburn University in Alabama to teach philosophy. She moved to New York City in 1942 with her husband, lawyer Richard Burwell (Dick) Persinger, where she joined the national board of the YWCA.
Mildred Persinger attended the United Nations' World Conference of International Women's Year, Mexico City, 1975, and was one of the founders of the International Women's Tribune Centre (La Tribuna), which emerged out of the Conference. This digital archive includes selected documents that highlight Persinger's international activism for six decades after 1940. Persinger played a crucial role in the emergence of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) as major players at the 1975 International Women's Year Conference and during the United Nations' Decade for Women that followed.
