Abstract
Join the Hollins' Girls' Literature Reading Group, led by Dr. Ashley Reese and Dr. Dawn Sardella-Ayres, for a special meeting time to correspond with the Own & Other Voices Symposium. After a brief presentation, we will discuss Jacqueline Kelly's The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. This Newbery Honor book, set in Texas at the turn of the 20th century, explores the girls' bildungsroman, evolution and scientific ambitions, grandfather-granddaughter relationships, and race in the South. Come join our conversation about how this 2009 novel intersects with both "classic" and contemporary girls' books and definitions of girls' books.
