Individual Presentation or Panel Title
Challenging Rape Myths: An Analysis of the Men Can Stop Rape Campaign
Abstract
This paper’s purpose is to analyze the Men Can Stop Rape [MCSR] campaign. The MCSR campaign started in 2005 and aims to stop rape by targeting men as the primary audience. The four texts used to criticize this campaign come from a program titled the “Strength” campaign, which focuses on the message that a man’s strength can stop rape. Specifically, this paper will examine how this campaign alters perceptions by addressing myths which can be associated with sexual assault and rape. This campaign shifts the view of who needs to be concerned about rape and sexual assault. The method which will be used is the analysis of the way that the MCSR campaign addresses myths while shifting the idea of when prevention should be addressed in regards to rape and sexual assault. An initial analysis of the four texts suggests that the campaign helps men shift perceptions of rape and sexual assault by changing the traditional views of prevention, as well as addressing common myths, which results in encouragement for men to take action.
