Aims & Scope
Cargoes includes Hollins University student work, occasional faculty work, and the winners of the Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest, an international contest open to women who are sophomores and juniors in high school. The Nancy Thorp poetry contest was created by Dr. and Mrs. Francis Q. Thorp in 1963 in memory of their daughter, a young poet who died in an automobile accident at the age of 24. From 1956-1958, Nancy was a student at Hollins, where she served on the staff of
Cargoes and was a member of Louis D. Rubin Jr.’s creative writing class.
