Individual Presentation or Panel Title
The Super Secret Cereal Drawer
Abstract
The Super Secret Cereal Drawer is a novel for 8-11 year olds that explores the themes of family, guilt, intergenerational friendship, and cereal-collecting. Blake, a nine-year-old misfit who can’t stop getting into trouble, lives with his dad and little sister, who has a big ugly scar on her face. When he discovers a box of mysterious postcards in his dad’s room, signed with a signature that looks kind of like Molten Llama, Blake must use all his detective skills to figure out who and where they’re from. Luckily, he meets Ms. Wiltscheck, an old lady artist who has travelled the world and has a collection of her own postcards. Together she and Blake solve the mystery, helping Blake overcome a painful secret from his past along the way. I created this novel for my English Honors Thesis and will submit it for publication. The work represents the culmination of four years of creative writing studies at Hollins, plus a lifetime of enthusiasm about children’s literature.
