Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Experimentations in Mixed Media Painting

Abstract

I spent this past January experimenting with a new process in mixed media painting. I created a water-based solution consisting of glue, acrylic paint, ink, and other media that I poured onto smooth, nonabsorbent surfaces like plastic or mirror and let dry. This technique creates a unique illusion of depth and translucency, especially when the surfaces are built up in layers. I have continued exploring this methodology this semester and plan to have a show exhibiting the resulting paintings in May. The work hinges on an interest in evoking a sense of ethereal presence. My goal is that upon looking at a piece, the viewer will become aware of a presence or weight in the space of the painting, yet be unable to define it exactly. Increasingly, these paintings represent the notion of a space in the mind for me, an idea that further drives the work.
