The Effect of Negative Air Ions on Seasonal Affective Disorder, Blood Oxygen, and Pulse Rate

Abstract

While past studies have utilized bright light therapy, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of high-density and zero-density negative air ions (anions) on the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), on blood oxygen level, and on pulse rate in 31 participants over 18 days. The supporting literature for this experiment was Terman’s research that found that exposure to high-density negative ions was as effective as bright light therapy in alleviating the symptoms of SAD (Terman & Terman, 1995; Terman, Terman, & Ross, 1998). Statistically significant differences (p=.05) were found regarding pulse level and decreases is all four self-report measures of SAD, but not for blood oxygen level. Participants in both active and placebo treatment groups reported feeling markedly better as the study progressed.
