Individual Presentation or Panel Title
Savages
Abstract
This work is a result from my own historical grief, and is also an accumulation of pieces I have learned from native feminisms. It also is the historical usage of the word “savages” with Native Americans. I incorporated several incidents from the novels I read and the documentaries I watched in class. My creative nonfiction brings to focus the colonists’ perception and wrongful sexualization of native women due to misunderstanding of their sexuality as women. I talk about colonization and conquest and the brutality of it. I talk about colonizing the land and its negative affects. I talk about the boarding schools for Native Americans and their purpose of “kill the Indian, save the man.” I talk about the genocide of Native Americans. I talk about the murders of Annie Mae and Raymond Yellow Thunder. I talk about cultural genocide. Then, I end with a native girl who writes poetry in order to deal with her historical grief and speak what her ancestors want her to say.
