Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Maoist Women and Women’s Empowerment in Nepal

Abstract

Maoist are armed rebel group in Nepal, who had been in civil war with the Nepali government for more than a decade. Has this armed rebel group helped in the women's empowerment or have they only caused destruction of lives?I use content analysis in this project analyze the movie called Sari Soldiers and a documentary called Women Rebel. Content analysis is used to identify, describe, record and compare themes. I argue that participation of women in the armed conflict in Nepal has uplifted Nepali women’s morale as they denounced traditional gender roles and exemplified their ability to participate in war, marching side by side with their male counterparts. It has raised women’s status in the society and taught them not to be limited within the private sphere of life where they would only do household chores, socialize the young or take care of the adults. This has challenged the patriarchal structure of the society because women are absent from their duties at home and are instead seen in the fields carrying weapons of mass destruction.
