Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Sustainability Education in Elementary Classrooms: Methods of Student Engagement

Abstract

The research questions guiding this project are what methods are used to teach sustainability education (SE) and how hands-on activities and real-world examples are used to engage students in lessons when implementing SE. The goal of this project is to research the different frameworks used in classrooms that implement SE. My methodology involves consulting current research into SE frameworks and lesson plans to determine which methods of student engagement have been found to be the most effective. From this research, I will develop criteria to create a pertinent collection of children’s books and environmental activities that will be donated to a library in the local community. I expect to find that the most effective methods of student engagement will be hands-on learning, critical thinking exercises, inter-disciplinary curriculum, and real-world learning.
