On The Road

Abstract

On The Road is a creative project created for The Beat Generation. It consists of pictures of my shoes in different places around campus as well as different areas of the country, matched with a quote from Jack Kerouac's book On The Road. The goal of the project was to tell the story of my three and a half years at Hollins with Kerouac as a muse. I entered Hollins with a pair of green converse shoes and a copy of On The Road. These two items, as ordinary as they were at the time, became an important part of my years at Hollins. They were physical markers of change; my shoes gradually became more beat up, On The Road became more marked up. When I looked at these items, I knew I had my project - and so, I recreated pictures with my shoes and found quotes and put together the story of my road at Hollins. This project is the last three and a half years of my life. Through these pictures, I saw how I grew and matured from freshman year to senior year.
