Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Making the Connection: Examining the Relationship Between Organizational Culture and Successful Human Resource Development in Small Business

Abstract

The integration of Human Resource (HR) departments in large organizations is a common phenomenon but occurs much less frequently in small organizations. It is understood that there are numerous reasons for the lack of HR integration in Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) including limited finances, short-staffing, organizational structure, and organizational size. By reviewing literature relating to HR and Organizational Culture, by observing organizational cultures, and by applying organizational communication knowledge, this paper aims to examine gaps in a sample of HR and small business literature. By utilizing research that seeks to explain the benefits of HR integration in small organizations, the paper addresses the relationship of organizational culture and structure to the success of SMEs. In addition, the paper will provide further examination of the structure of small to medium-sized organizations and evaluate the contextual validity of the examined texts. Finally, the paper will draw attention to the connection of organizational culture to the success of SMEs.
