Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Transcriptions of Nicolas Poussin's Triumph of Flora and Sleeping Venus and Cupid

Abstract

This project consists of two transcriptions (reproductions) of Nicolas Poussin’s paintings Sleeping Venus and Cupid (1630) and Triumph of Flora (1627) in a contemporary painting style. Nicolas Poussin was a Renaissance painter who drew upon classical Roman and Greek art as inspiration for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes. Sleeping Venus and Cupid and Triumph of Flora depict scenes from Roman and Greek mythology of the goddesses Venus and Flora. The paintings for this project are large-scale oil paintings using drips to reproduce Poussin’s Sleeping Venus and Cupid and Triumph of Flora. The artist is interested in what the old master painters conveyed in their paintings and how they drew upon previous artists and artworks for inspiration. The artist wants to explore these same ideas in a contemporary way. In addition, these paintings aim to explore a process of painting that artist Chrissy Angliker describes as the balance between the controllable and uncontrollable through using drips to convey form.
