Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Where Are All the Heroes? A Look at Diversity in American Comic Book Media

Abstract

This presentation will examine the historical and current state of diversity in existent comics-based media, particularly in regard to superhero-based media, before looking at how the scene is changing and why characters that could bring diversity to lineups do not necessarily make it to the big screen. Our presentation will conclude with a discussion of the potential future of comics-based media. We are also running a blog devoted to the exploration, discussion, and criticism of political, cultural, and social issues as they are presented in comics media, comics movies, comics-based TV shows, and other media. Some of the comics we will be focusing on in our presentation are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, and Batgirl, as well as Web comics such as Kamikaze, Namesake, and Sister Claire. We will also be discussing issues pertaining to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as the Avengers and Ant-Man, and the DC Cinematic Universe. We will also examine animated TV shows such as Young Justice, Static Shock, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
