Individual Presentation or Panel Title

Young Folks in Traditional Music

Abstract

Our research centers around an exploration of the relationship that traditional music (primarily Appalachian) has with young people in modern times. The focus is on young musicians and how they relate to traditional music, as well as how the music is taught and how young musicians interpret and perform it. Through historical research, interviewing young musicians, and firsthand experience observing this culture at work, we highlight the influence that young people bring to the cultural progressions of traditional music. The influence that young people have on these cultures is undeniable and inspires the communities of their regions to continue the legacy of these traditions. The way in which young people learn and perform this music is not much different from those before them, yet the music takes on a different meaning in today’s modern world. These performers and their experiences shape the future of traditional music and are vital in continuing their cultural traditions.
