Individual Presentation or Panel Title

On the Blocks

Abstract

My short film, "On the Blocks," explores what swimmers go through in the moments leading up to a race. My purpose for creating this film was to give those unfamiliar with the world of competitive swimming a glimpse into preparing for a race and the emotional pains that go into such preparation. Through interviews with Hollins University swimmers, this project seeks to give a holistic description of the mental, emotional, and physical rewards and challenges associated with such an individualized competition in particular and in athletic events in general. The swimmers describe their strategies during a race, their thoughts while taking their marks, various swimming strokes and events, what they may be visualizing in preparation, and their memories of particular races - both entertaining and frightening. Athletic success is often not solely a result of strenuous physical training and ability, but a result of mental and emotional factors as well. Through this film, I hope to highlight these factors in an emotionally engaging way.
