Quick Change Costume Construction
Abstract
As part of my theatre honors thesis I have constructed three outfits that are specifically rigged for imagined quick changes. Quick changes are often used in theatrical productions when a character must exit and change outfits quickly, possibly in a matter of seconds, and come back on stage in a completely different costume. While I have constructed costumes before, I have never built and rigged a costume from the beginning to end for an intense quick change. I constructed three quick change costumes using snaps, zippers and magnets. Two of the costumes started as store purchased clothing that were sewn to become “onesies” for quick changes. The third was an evening gown I sewed and added magnets so the dress can hide underneath a shorter length costume. This research and construction has help me in my capstone project to both build my experience and portfolio and to help me succeed after Hollins.
