Individual Presentation or Panel Title

One Summer Morning

Abstract

One Summer Morning is about an enigmatic gentleman, Churchill, who stops into a café. Shortly thereafter, all of the patrons in the café mysteriously perish. Though Churchill appears at first to be a simple voyeur, it becomes rapidly unclear whether he is a force for good or for evil. There is an imminent sense of doom throughout the piece and, as the story progresses, the victims from the coffee shop are introduced via a series of quick vignettes. As their lives unfold and each individual is revealed, the victims all find themselves compelled by some means or another to go to the café by the close of their respective scenarios. My purpose was to create a short, thought-provoking work that encompasses a sense of foreboding, humour, and surprise. I also wanted to include depth of character by studying a varied assortment of personalities. I have worked on this piece during several courses at Hollins—English 141, 142, and 208. This story expresses an Absurdist view of a microcosmic universe and it is the culmination of several years’ worth of work.
